Polarizabilities of Aluminum Clusters

A recent experimental investigation of the static polarizabilities of aluminium clusters has shown that these deviate from the predictions of the spherical jellium model for sizes N≤40 (N is the number of atoms in the cluster). More specifically, the measured polarizabilities are smaller than those predicted by the jellium model. In this paper we have performed calculations by a method which takes into account the geometry of the cluster. Our finding is that the cluster is more compact than in the jellium model, that is, it has a smaller radius. This size contraction leads to the observed small polarizabilities.
